Protestantは「抗議」の意味だった

protestはそもそも名詞と動詞があり、発音が違うらしい。

名詞

A large protest was held outside the White House.

大規模な抗議運動がホワイトハウスの外で行われた。

動詞

動詞では「～に抗議する、異議を申し立てる」の意味ですが、後ろがforかagainstかで意味が異なります。

forもagainstもない場合は「反対する」の意味になります。

People were protesting abortion outside the clinic.

人々はクリニックの外で中絶の反対運動をしていた。

後ろがforの場合は「～を求めて」と考え、againstは「～に反対して」と考えるほうが間違いが起きにくいです

They are protesting for shorter hours.

彼らはより短い労働時間を求めて抗議している。

They are protesting against abortion.

＝ They are protesting abortion.

彼らは中絶に反対して抗議している。
