  • RULE 1: When reporting a question, the question forms the subordinate clause. It follows a statement word order rather than a question word order. When the question is reported with past tense verbs, such as asked, the verb in the subordinate clause moves back a verb tense. EXAMPLES: Who is your barber? He asked me who my barber was. When will you teach me how to drive? He asked me when I would teach him how to drive. RULE 2: Embedded Yes/No questions are introduced with if or whether. The words if and whether are interchangeable. However, whether is more formal in tone, and if is more common in spoken English. EXAMPLES: Do you want to get married? He asked me if I wanted to get married. He asked me whether I wanted to get married.
